GPT-4 is here!

OpenAI has released GPT-4, the latest next-generation large language model. Its predecessor, GPT-3.5, is the engine behind ChatGPT, which has taken the world by storm. Access to GPT-4 will be available to users who sign up for the waitlist and subscribers of ChatGPT Plus in a limited, text-only capacity.

Imagine a World Where Machines Can “See” the World

One of GPT-4’s most significant upgrades is its multi-modal ability, allowing it to process both text and images, making it capable of “seeing” the world. In terms of its capabilities, if it were a causal conversation, the difference between GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 would be subtle. However, the difference comes when the complexity of the task reaches a sufficient threshold, making GPT-4 more reliable, creative, and able to handle much more nuanced instructions than GPT-3.5.

Let’s Learn About What the Latest GPT-4 is Capable of

(1) Breaking the Text-Only Barrier and Seeing the World

When given an image, GPT4 can describe what it ‘sees’ in great detail and provide reasoning to interpret the context.

  • When asked “What’s funny about this image?”,
  • GPT-4 replied, “The image is funny because it shows a squirrel holding a camera and taking a photo of a nut as if it were a professional photographer. It’s a humorous situation because squirrels typically eat nuts, and we don’t expect them to use a camera or act like humans.”

Now imagine how you can leverage this:

  • For instance, if you’re in the amusement park business, you can use GPT4-powered Digital Guest Ambassador app to provide a delightful and frictionless guest experience.
  • Navigation is common pain points in many theme parks. When a guest is seeking assistance, they can simply take a picture of where they are, and the App could provide the guests with highly contextual, seamless navigation instructions.
  • Customers would be grateful because their kids won’t miss the dolphin show!

(2) Breaking the Barrier of Tools and Hard Skills

GPT-4 can turn an extremely rough sketch into working code.

  • This does not mean that designers and developers are no longer needed.
  • On the contrary, new tools powered by Generative AI would make it possible for the team to put their brainpower on understanding and creating values for customers.

Now imagine how you can leverage this:

  • Instead of spending all the time on development without knowing the value of the product or feature, your product teams can now co-pilot with GPT, and invest time in the highest ROI activities, including opportunity discovery, fast prototyping, and solution validation.

(3) Breaking the Barrier of Information Overloading

GPT4 can digest vast amounts of documentation, be it the works of Shakespeare, API documentation, or even tax codes. For instance, GPT4 can decipher tax codes, as shown in the demo below.

Now imagine how you can leverage this:

  • If you are in the business of selling highly complicated products, such as insurance policies, you can design and build a GPT-4-powered helper to answer any questions your customers may have at any time of the day.
  • Your customers would attain trust in your brand and clarity in your products, enabling them to purchase the product with complete peace of mind.

Seize the Opportunity for Digital Experience Transformation

I was invited by Apple Hong Kong to give a talk titled “Why UX Could Be Your IT Team’s Best Friend?”

In my talk, I used the analogy of a team of chefs working on creating the next signature dish for their restaurant.

  • Technologies are the ingredients (the in-season meat and vegetables) they have in their kitchen, and
  • UX is the methodology the team of chefs can use to design the mouth-watering recipe to win the hearts of their targeted customers.

GPT-4 and other Generative AI technologies are clearly the most amazing ingredients you can have in your kitchen. The question is, is your team ready to seize this opportunity?
